Its companies were made up from various militia units within the Bay State. In late December, 1861, the regiment was sent to Hilton Head, South Carolina. The regiment followed with General Wright’s Corps in pursuit of the enemy until Early’s force had retired across the Shenandoah River, then returned to its camp at Falls Church.
